When I have finished my story, Lord Richard frowns. "That is unwelcome news," he says. "With the previous Sultan, I had thought that relations between our two countries might improve. But Arif is known as a hard- liner, and if he succeeds to the throne then things are likely to get even worse than they are now. If only you had been with child."

"I'm sorry."

He manages a wry grin. "Well it is hardly your fault that you're not. I suppose that there's no hope that any of the other concubines might be pregnant? That would scupper Arif's claim."

"Not that I heard of, and I think that I would have been bound to have done. It would be hard to keep something like that a secret in the harem."

Lord Richard resolves to go to Artazia and find his son. I surprise him (and myself) by offering to go with him. "That would be very dangerous," he points out. "Probably no more so than for you, a Laralian lord, to go there."
I make a suggestion: Perhaps Teran, the mercenary, would be willing to help us find Don. That's assuming that we can find him, of course.
