"Yes, I have news of Sir Donald," I say.
"Then please come in, my lady," the guard says, now a lot more polite than he had been originally. I wave farewell to Teran, and then follow the guard into the castle.He leads me to a room with tapestries on the walls, a fine - but rather threadbare - carpet, and several comfortable-looking but well-worn armchairs. It looks as though the De Freydair family was once wealthy but is now comparatively impoverished. "Please make yourself comfortable, whilst I go and find out whether Lord De Freydair will see you." I reflect that Donald never told me that his father was a lord. Perhaps that is no big deal here? "Thank you," I say. "Before I go, shall I take your travelling robe? I could have it laundered for you, if you like." The robe has acquired a fair amount of the dust of the dry lands through which I have passed, and the robe being black the dust is very visible. But it doesn't seem wise yet to reveal just how scanty my attire is underneath it. "Thank you," I say, "but I'll keep it on for now." The guard gives me a puzzled look, then leaves in search of his master. Ten minutes later:
