"You and the other concubines will be assured of your safety and privacy
in the harem until the Sultan's successor is chosen. Typically, a new
Sultan will evaluate the harem girls, perhaps choosing one or two to
remain. The others will often be given as gifts to allies and other men
in the Sultan's family. However, that is moot as far as you are
concerned. Either you will play an instrumental role in preventing Arif's
rise to power, or he will become Sultan and have you killed, along with
myself, Munaf, any ministers found collaborating against him, and
possibly the other girls."
"This sounds way too risky if it's found out!" I say. "I certainly don't want to put all those people in danger." "This is a bold political power play. Arif is technically next in line, after all." the captain explains. "Of course there's some risk involved. But there is no other way to prevent Arif coming to power. If you don't cooperate, I cannot help you." I sigh with resignation. "All right, I'll go along with your plans. I don't know what else I can do, other than face execution for a crime I didn't commit." "Very well, I will go talk with Munaf about our plans. He should return shortly to take you back to the harem. After this, I won't see you for several weeks, I suspect. Relay any messages to me through Munaf. I will do the same for you. I will let you know when I have the support of the majority of the ministers, then we can make our move." He then departs. I sit down and wait. My mind is racing. How will the other girls react when they learn of the Sultan's death? What if Arif or his men find me anyway? What if I'm not pregnant? Oh, god, what if I am? I don't know if I can take this much longer.
