Escaping back to the harem won't help much, I realise, as I would still
have the problem of escaping from there. Remaining in the harem and
feigning ignorance won't work, as Munaf and the guard between the harem
and the Sultan's private quarters - at a minimum - know that I was with
the Sultan and hadn't returned to the harem before nightfall.
The courtyard offers no better prospects. By the time I could climb its high wall, I would almost certainly be seen and captured. Even if I somehow managed to get out of the palace altogether, wouldn't I soon be hunted down in the city? I can't go back to Zal and expect him to hide me, as I'm sure he would face very severe punishment if I were to be discovered. It wouldn't be fair on him. Could I leave the city? It would have to be on foot, since I can't ride. The surrounding countryside is semi-desert, and I doubt that I would get very far. I decide that my best chance, though it doesn't seem a very good one, is to tell the truth and hope to be believed. An idea occurs to me that might cause them to hesitate before executing me out of hand. For all they - and indeed I - know, I could already be carrying the Sultan's child. I suspect that such a child might be his heir, as I have heard no talk of any other children. Killing me would of course kill that unborn child.
