That does not sound like good news as far as my chances of being rescued
are concerned. No doubt the harem will be very well guarded. Nor does it
seem likely that the Sultan would be open to financial offers for any of
his concubines - if that is the correct term for the members of a harem.
Looking for a silver lining, I try to console myself that at least being
in a harem shouldn't be quite as degrading as working in a brothel.
"How many girls are there in the harem?" I ask. The minister raises an eyebrow. "You are rather forward for a slave," he says. "But I suppose that you haven't been one for very long, so I will excuse you. From your looks, you are obviously a foreigner, so I imagine that you were recently captured by a raiding party. Therefore your ignorance of proper behaviour is not to be wondered at. I am in a good mood, however, so I will answer your question.
