I realise that it's one of the raiding party that Don and I were captured
by. Evidently at least one of those who were escorting Don to the slave
market managed to get away unscathed. He's drinking alone, sitting at an
ill-lit table tucked away in a corner.
He beckons me over. Fearing the worst, I walk across to his table. "Well, well, it's a small world," he says. "Maris told me that you'd escaped." Maris must be the leader's name, I take it. He goes on: "He's not too happy about today's events, as you can imagine. Now I'm not over- eager to tell him where you're to be found. Not after the names he called me for letting your friend get away. But if you don't make it worth my while not to tell him, I might be forced to, if you know what I mean? After all, he'd probably give me a gold piece or two for news of your whereabouts." What he means is clear enough. He's trying to blackmail me. "What do you want? I don't have any money." "It's not money that I want. I think you can guess what I want." I can indeed. The way he's leering at me makes it obvious. What should I tell him? None of my options seems at all palatable.
