I don't know what has made the raiders return, but by the time we spot
them it is too late for us to hide, and of course outrunning men on
horseback isn't an option. We are swiftly surrounded. There are six of
them in all. Though not as heavily armoured as Don, they all wield wicked-
looking swords.
Don draws his sword and prepares to fight. "Don't be a fool, sir knight," one of the raiders, presumably their leader, says. "You have no chance against so many. If you lay down your sword, we will let you and the wench live. Unlike the traders whom we killed, both of you look young and fit, and so you should fetch us a worthwhile price at the next slave auction." Don says: "I will surrender only if you give me your word that the lady will not be maltreated." "Lady!" one of the men guffaws, evidently having drawn the wrong conclusion from my nudity. The leader glares at him, apparently displeased by his indiscipline, then turns back to Don and says: "Very well. Whilst you could not win, you might succeed in wounding or even killing one of us, and I see no reason to risk that if it can be avoided. You have my word that the woman will not be harmed or abused in any way, at least up until the auction. I cannot guarantee what will happen to her after that."
