If I'm going to escape, I decide that it would be best to do so as
quickly
as possible. That way, it won't be too far back to the oasis, where at
least there should be water to be had, and perhaps food as well. Also my
chances of getting away without being spotted must be greater whilst it is
still dark.
They evidently don't expect me to try anything as foolhardy as rolling out of a moving wagon with my hands still tied behind my back, as they haven't put a guard in the back to keep an eye on me. I'm desperate enough to risk it however. Hoping that I won't break my neck in the process, I scramble up over the tailboard and drop to the ground. I'm fortunate that the wagon was the last but one in the line, as well as that I suffer nothing worse than a few bruises. Before I can scramble up (not easy with my hands tied behind my back) and get off the track, the final wagon reaches me. Luckily the driver isn't alert enough to notice me, being content to let the mules follow the track as they no doubt do more or less automatically, having followed the route many times before. Even more luckily, the mules have enough sense to make a minor detour to avoid trampling me. I just manage to roll out of the way of the front near wheel, and a moment later the wagon is past me. I lie there for a while, in case anyone should chance to look back, and then I struggle to my feet.
