Entering the Dark Basement

"Danielle? Jean? Paul?" Jacques finds himself calling for his family as
he gropes around the house. Knowing the house by memory, he’s able to
locate every room.
"No good" He curses as he flips on the light-switch at the top of the basement stairs. Nothing. ”Just as I expected” he thinks bitterly. He’s tried every switch, lamp, flashlight, and every other light source in his house. Not even a faintest glimmer roused from them.Half an hour has passed since Jacques entered his darkened home. He’s searched the garage, the main floor, the patio, and the upstairs. Although they’d been devoid of life, the shape of them felt familiar. He remembered he lain his Turquoise Old Navy sweater he’d received for his last birthday right on top of the alarm clock before he’d left on his daily tour that day, and while he was groping, he’d found it right their where he’d left it. He put it on not only for warmth, but also for a sense of familiarity. He is now entering the only room he hasn't yet explored: the basement. Jacques gropes for the hand railing to the stairs, but it seems to no longer exist. He carefully descends down the cold, cement steps one by one, each footstep’s echo disappearing into the thick darkness shrouding him.After fifteen steps, he stretches out his right leg, expecting to come in contact with solid ground, but instead, all he feels is cold, empty air before feeling his foot touch the edge of yet another set of steps. Caught by surprise, he loses his balance. Before he could tumble down, his reflexes forced his entire body backwards, causing him to fall back first onto the slanted edges of the stairs. ”Extra steps have been added!”Behind him, he hears a shrill squeaking of the basement door as it slams shut, seemingly at its own will. It is followed by a faint *click* which causes Jacques’s heart to sink. ”That couldn’t have just happened…”He pushes up his aching body, and then carefully climbs back up the stairs and turns the doorknob.
