Castellan decided to get out of the caves as quickly as possible, and to find a magic user, pretending to be mad and in need of help. He could then take over the man's body. It would give him access to the man's magical supplies and his library of spell-books, as well as to his memory, which would give him access to better information about any recent developments in magic than Fred's memory could. The library would help with that as well, of course.
Once he had left Fred's body he would have to kill the knight, of course. He could not afford a witness to what he had done. Talking of witnesses, he saw that the shade of the princess was following him. Well let her. She could do him no harm and, like all the other spirits, would be incapable of leaving the caves. The dragon's magical wards [99508] were as effective against the dead as against the living. Of course he himself had enough magical knowledge that they would not be a problem for him. (It had been a great frustration when he had found after his death that spirits were unable to use magic and that therefore he was trapped. His suggestion to Astra that he had spent hundreds of years in the caves deliberately had been no more than an unwillingness to lose face.) He went over his plan once more. Perhaps it would be better to kill the magic user rather than to take over his body? He would still get access to the man's belongings, and Fred's body was almost certain to be far younger and fitter than the mage's. Also Fred did not look like anyone's idea of a magic user, which he might be able to turn to his advantage.
