Fred hoped that the reason that Astra had been unable to leave the boat might be not that she was "tied" to it but that she was unable to cross water. He had heard legends that said that vampires could not do so and, though she was not a vampire, perhaps the same thing applied to ghosts. (In spite of her having rubbished the idea that she was afraid to get her feet wet. Maybe she simply wasn't aware of just why she couldn't leave the boat.)

And perhaps that was the reason, for Astra found that she could follow him. "It actually worked!" she said delightedly. "I never thought that it would. I may still be a ghost, but at least now I can hope that my life - er, make that non-life - will be much more interesting in future. Thank you, thank you, thank you! In repayment I will do all that I can to help you against the dragon. Assuming that you intend to continue with your quest that is, now that I have told you how formidable he is with his ability to use magic."

  1. "I feel in honour bound to continue. I'm not sure how you can help, though. Presumably you cannot wield a weapon, or indeed any other item." "No, but I could reconnoitre for you. I have the great advantage that he can't kill me, as I'm already dead."
