"That was my quest too," Astra said. "Unfortunately I did not realise that the beast was a weredragon, able to transform himself into human form, and that while in that form he was a powerful magic user. Of course, given the length of time that seems to me to have passed, I can't be sure that 'your' dragon is the same one."
Fred was both surprised and alarmed. "This is all news to me. How did you find all this out?" "I learnt it the hard way. He easily defeated me and then made my clothes and supplies vanish." Sure enough, the ghostly figure was naked, but Fred hadn't liked to enquire why. He had thought that perhaps originally Astra had been clothed but that her garments had eventually rotted away. She went on: "Then to my surprise he let me go. Surely he couldn't let me return to Aqualaria, since once I warned them he would find our mightest magic users arrayed against him, rather than warriors. But then he said: 'I have magic wards in place that prevent anyone from leaving these caverns unless they are carrying one of my magic tokens. Most who come here quickly die of hunger, but the more ingenious or bloodthirsty can survive almost indefinitely. I hope that you will be one of them. Or perhaps it would be kinder to hope that you will die quickly and painlessly.' With that he left me. I didn't encounter anyone else until, only a day or so later, I found this waterway. I hoped that it might be an exit that the dragon had somehow overlooked. I've already told you what happened after that."
