"Because I once went that way too, many years ago. I was still alive then. I took one of the boats just like you have done, curious to see where the canal would take me. That boat, like this one, had a name, though I can no longer remember what it was. I emerged from the mouth of the tunnel into the moonlight. I don't know what happened after that. The next thing that I can recall is being back at the dock end of the canal, and no longer a corporeal being but a ghost. And the name that had been on the boat had been replaced by my own. I found that I was powerless to stray more than a short distance away from it. I have no idea what became of my corpse - assuming that when I died I left one. As you can imagine, the years since then have been very boring, for people rarely venture here and there is nothing to pass the time. Had I still been alive, I suspect that I would have gone mad from the tedium. I say 'years' because it feels like years, but I have no way of knowing how long has really passed."
"So you think that if I had proceeded..." "That you too would have become a ghost, condemned to haunt this boat, whose name would have been changed to be your own. What would have happened to me then I do not know. Perhaps I should have ceased to exist. Had I thought of that at the time, I should have been tempted to let you go on." "Your story reminds me of an old legend in my country that somewhere there is an underground river which leads to the world of the dead. I thought of the legend as I was rowing along the canal, but I've never taken it seriously." "It sounds as though the story might be more than just a legend. We do not have such a legend in my own country of Aqualaria, as far as I'm aware, or perhaps I should have been more cautious."
