Diverging Convergence

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 98846

Astra asked for a manicure set, but Minestus and Belboz just carried on with their discussion.

M: Minestus B: Belboz A: Astra, actions denoted by asterisks (*)

M: Well, that doesn't explain the time looping sufficiently. That would be a dimensional fold, not a multiversal tear!
B: Quite right, but what that means is that this crack doesn't access the convergence, just a divergence caused by it.
M: How do we access the convergence itself? How do we widen the tear into a fold? *paces*
A: But you said it was a fold.
B: *chuckle* A dimensional fold. We need to access the multiversal fold which is causing the convergence itself.
A: *muttering* I still need a manicure kit.
M: *snaps his fingers* I have it! Cast a spell directly at the crack. It will cause your magic to warp and in that moment Astra can reach into it again.
A: What?
B: Ah! And she can focus on her experiences in the Enterprising Inn at that moment, which should give the convergence a place to focus!
M: Precisely!
A: You mean that stuff actually happened? *notices her fingernails have been manicured, sees a wink from Minestus* Thanks!
M: That isn't important right now. This is a workable plan! We have to do it quick, before...

Astra wasn't sure whether she had been hallucinating, or if all that strange stuff at the Enterprising Inn, not to mention all the variations of Fred and Belboz and the alternate version of herself had actually happened. And... something about a.. convergence? What? Oh well, there was no use worrying about that now, she decided. The endless silence was really on her nerves. However she had the strong feeling that Fred - she hoped that she hadn't only hallucinated him - ought to be appearing at any moment to free her.

The worst thing was the boredom, she had decided on that long ago. About fifty yards down the tunnel, a torch attached to the wall gave just enough light to prevent her from being in total darkness. Watching its flickering was the nearest thing to sensory stimulation that she had available.

More silence. She realised that she couldn't tell if it had lasted minutes or hours. Maybe it was days. No, it couldn't be days, she decided, as she didn't feel hungry or thirsty. Unless the dragon had cast a spell on her to prevent her becoming hungry or thirsty?

"Hello!" she called eventually, more to break that oppressive silence than with any expectation of a reply.

  1. As expected, there was no response.
  2. But there was an answering "Hello!" Then she saw a flickering torch flame in the distance, the torch presumably being carried by the person who had answered her hail.
  3. Conflicting memories about being chained up with Belboz, Lady Astra, and Fred flit at the edge of Astra's memory. Astra realizes she may be losing her mind. She has to escape! But how?
  4. There is a blur, then Astra is once again standing with Belboz and Minestus and the scroll. "We have to hurry!" shrieks Belboz. And so they do!
