Now that the man had pushed back his hood, Fred saw a weathered face topped by short hair just starting to go grey. Fred guessed that he was in his forties. "I would have thought that a magic user who was powerful enough to kill Zenobia like that wouldn't need to worry about money," he said, playing for time.

"Money's always useful. And a slave trader will pay well for a fit, strong young man like you."

"You said that you've been tracking Zenobia for weeks. So I assume that there must have been a big bounty on her head. How will you prove that you've killed her so that you can claim it?"

  1. "There's a distinctive ring on her finger that I'm going to remove."
  2. "In her case it wasn't a question of bounty but personal. You see she turned my sister into a toad."
