As Fred and Velus entered the store, some of the goblins moved in behind them to cut off their escape. Then Old Gek cancelled his illusion. As Fred and Velus stared around in confusion, the goblin leader trained his pistol on Fred. "Fools!" he said. "Drop your sword, then come forward and join your friend Astra."
"Who are you?" Fred said. "What's going on here? And what's that thing you're pointing at me?" "A weapon. Let me demonstrate." Switching his aim to a cardboard box a little to one side of where Fred was standing, Old Gek vaporised it. "It could do that to you just as easily," he said. "So I suggest that you do as I tell you." "I don't think that this is the time for heroics, Fred," Astra called. In the gloom of the store (lit only by emergency lighting), Fred spotted her for the first time. "Are you all right?" he said, dropping his sword as he had been ordered and walking forward towards her. "I'm fine. They want to ransom me, but if you don't have enough money they'll be just as happy to sell the three of us into slavery instead." "I hadn't realised that one of your so-called friends was a dog," Old Gek said to Astra. "That's rather disappointing. He won't fetch much."
