Belboz was watching Astra. With his magic he could make it so that no action that she might take would ever have a predictable result. She would have the torment of gradually coming to understand that she could never know in advance whether anything that she did would result in pleasure or pain or simply weirdness. He had decided that observing that would be more interesting for him than the life of absolute boredom that he had threatened her with.
He wondered what the effect on her would be, as the hours turned into days and the days into weeks. Would she eventually give up trying to do anything at all, and sink into a near catatonic state? Or would she lose all grip on reality and become insane? She might try to kill herself with the dagger, but of course he had ensured that that could never happen.
