It occurred to Astra that, if she had only dreamed of killing Belboz then she might be dreaming once again, with the dream being forced on her by the necromancer. But if that was the case, she could see no way of waking from it, so it made no practical difference. If the pain from the chalk had not wakened her, then pinching herself would surely be pointless.

She decided to pick up the second piece of chalk again. Maybe it would be different this time. If not then, knowing that she would not actually be harmed, she thought that she might be able to withstand the pain. The sensation of freezing was not so bad as that of burning.

  1. The sensation was the same but, gritting her teeth, she was able to write on the floor a rude message aimed at Belboz.
  2. The sensation was the same and it proved too much for her to bear. She had to drop the chalk.
  3. The sensation was different this time.
  4. This time, there was no sensation at all beyond that of holding an ordinary piece of chalk.
  5. But her intention was foiled, as she realised that when she had dropped the second piece of chalk it had rolled away out of her reach.
