"Hey, can we talk for a bit?" Fred asked his companion.
"Given that you've already started, that's not really up to me, is it?"
"Well, only if I wanted to have a monologue. I was hoping that you'd join me. In conversation. With each other."
"Do all humans engage in fragmentary speech like this?"
"No, but most of them don't really talk with dragons regularly."
"Oh? Do you fear me, then?"
"Of course I do! You've killed people! You breathe fire and fly and eat livestock whole!"
"I object to that. I always prepare my meals properly and carefully tease the bones apart."
"Wow, you cook? What kind of recipes do you know?"
"Well, I usually just, umm, heat the meat up." She shifted uncomfortably.
"...What about spices?"
"I don't have them."
"Why not? That seems like it would make some really bland meat."
"It's not bland! And I wasn't in a position to acquire spices, in any case."
"Except garlic."
"Except that."
It occurred to Fred that he was getting rather off topic.
