"No, of course not," Belboz managed to gasp, as blood poured from the wound. (Astra noted that his blood was red. She had half expected it to be black.) "I took the precaution of enchanting the dagger in such a way that, I thought, it could not harm me. It seems that I made a mistake."

1. Belboz expires. Astra looks for something to take back to the dragon to prove that she has killed him, so that he will free her sisters. If he reneges on their geas - and perhaps even if he abides by it - then she will try to use the dagger on him.
2. Belboz expires, but not before placing a terrible curse on Astra.
3. Belboz survives. It's not so easy to kill a necromancer.
