Astra was pleased to find that the items included trousers rather than a skirt; trousers were much more practical. Naturally the things weren't a perfect fit: the trousers were a couple of inches too short in the leg, and the top was very tight over her bust. The attire wasn't as warm as she would have liked for travelling over the mountains, and there weren't any shoes. But even so it was a lot better than nothing.

"You said 'one of my assistants'," Fred pointed out. "Does that mean that one or more of them might put in an appearance here at any time?"

  1. "Yes." That meant that Fred and Astra would need to leave at once rather than waiting for dark, if they didn't want to risk being discovered.
  2. "There's not much work on at the moment, so I gave all of them the afternoon off."
  3. Someone must have spotted Fred and/or Astra's short journey from the barn to the smithy and raised the alarm, as at that moment four of the dragon's soldiers burst in.
