It had turned out that one of the buildings that Fred and Astra had
thought were supply sheds was actually a smithy. When Fred entered, the
blacksmith said: "I don't know you."
"I'm a new farmhand," Fred said. "I don't think so. You aren't dressed like one, and you have a sword at your belt. And you aren't dressed in the livery of the dragon's soldiers either. I'm taking you to the captain of the dragon's guard for questioning." With that, the smith picked up a nearby sword that he had recently forged. Fred drew his own sword, and the two men fought. It soon became clear to Fred that the smith was a very good swordsman and that the two of them were well-matched. When you forged swords as part of your work, it helped to be good with a blade, so that you could check that the balance and "feel" of your handiwork were right. When Astra entered the smithy, right in the smith's line of sight, the two were still locked in combat. But the smith was so astonished by seeing a beautiful naked woman walk through the door that he dropped his guard for a moment. Fred could have run him through, but he had no stomach for that and merely disarmed him with a flick of his own blade. Astra picked up the man's fallen sword. "Nice weapon," she said. While Fred kept his sword at the smith's throat, Astra searched for some rope with which to tie him up. She swiftly discarded the idea that she might take the man's clothes to wear. Not only would they not fit her at all well but also they reeked of his sweat. Being a smith was very hot and sweaty work.
