Stacy and Julie started to protest, but Falk held up his hand for
silence. "We need
you two as witnesses, and this could be dangerous" he said. "If anything
was to happen to you to prevent your
testifying, it's unlikely
that we'd have a case that would stand up in court." "But what could
possibly happen
to us if we were there under police protection?" asked Stacy. "I mean, if
they shot us in
front of you, you'd have a pretty watertight case of murder, wouldn't
you?" "I won't
have enough men to keep an eye on you all the time, and I'm not prepared
to take
any chances. I can understand that you want to see this through, but
please try to
be reasonable.
"Now, I've had second thoughts about your waiting here. It's already late, and it could be several hours before I get back. I know you must be tired and a police station isn't a very comfortable place to spend the night, so I'm going to arrange for a colleague to take you to a nearby hotel. You'll please stay there in your room until you hear from me. Don't worry if you haven't any money. The police will meet the bill for the room and for any meals that you might have."
