Madame Sylande welcomed Emry into her modest but comfortable home. "I
knew that you would be coming to see me," she said, once they had sat
down. As she spoke, she passed him a cup of tea and offered him a pastry.
Emry managed a smile. "I would have expected no less of you. I have been having some strange dreams of late, and I was hoping that you could tell me what they mean." "And what exactly have you dreamt?" "That I was the rightful king, and that Lord Reaibn was no more than my servant. It seems ridiculous, and yet..." "And yet?" "Somehow it also seemed right. What does it mean?" This was the moment that she had been dreading. If she told Emry the truth then, given how powerful Reaibn was thanks to the Eye, things were likely to go very badly for him. There were many worse fates than being a drunken gravedigger. And there was the welfare of his daughter, Exotica, to think of too. And yet did she have the right to keep the truth from him?
