"Oh really?" said Fred sceptically. "Yes. See that large boulder over
there. It must
weigh at least fifty pounds, wouldn't you say? Try lifting it." "This is
ridiculous.
I doubt that I can even move it, let alone lift it." Nevertheless, Fred
walked over
to the rock, bent his back, took hold of it, and attempted to lift it.
He had thought that at best, after a mighty struggle, he might be able to raise it a few inches off the ground for a second or two. To his great surprise, he lifted the boulder above his head as easily as if it had been made of cork. He felt that he could hold it there almost indefinitely, but after ten seconds or so he lowered it to the ground. "It seems you were right," he conceded. "Maybe this isn't so hopeless after all." "You now have four of five days before the amazons arrive, in which to organise the resistance," Belboz told him. "So return to the surface and go to see the King at once. No-one will believe that you are Fred, so you are going to need a female name. I suggest that you call yourself Joan and claim to come from the distant village of Arc. You could try saying that you've been sent by God. That usually goes down well."
