Carl was unaware as yet that he was in deep trouble with Sylvia. Instead
he concentrated on observing the two prisoners of the stasis beam. He had
noticed that his
light meter, which he had naturally brought with him, was no longer
detecting any radiation at all from the beam - or rather from where it
had previously been. If he was right, that should mean that the two young
women would come out of stasis at any moment, and it was therefore worth
his while waiting. Of course whether he would be able to communicate with
them was another matter. Whilst some of the legends had suggested that
Exotica had dabbled in magic, from what he had been able to gather it had
been very different in nature from Siva's. That seemed to be confirmed by
the absence of any visible sigils on her skin. And of course he couldn't
even be sure that the dark-haired woman was Exotica.
The redhead - presumably Astra - began to move first. Carl prepared to say a few welcoming words. Even if she couldn't understand them, he hoped that she would recognise the friendly, non-threatening tone in which they were said. Then, too quickly for him to react, she swung a punch at him. He suddenly found himself lying on the floor of the tunnel, rubbing his aching jaw, and watching the two women running off into the distance. Shit! he thought. I should have been prepared for something like that. They emerged from stasis and saw some oddly-dressed stranger staring intently at them. Even if they didn't assume that I was the servant of whoever imprisoned them, they'd probably imagine that I was a voyeur. They might even have thought that my light meter was a weapon.
