Stasis Field Beta

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 94866

The second stasis field was not all that far from the first, and it was a little suprising that Fred and Siva had not noticed it. Perhaps that was partly because the pillar of light that was its visible manifestation had faded over the centuries. In fact when Carl had measured the intensity with a light meter on successive days he had found that there was a measurable difference even between one day and the next, suggesting that the decline must have accelerated in recent times. Perhaps the disturbance to the caves caused by the HPS in recent months was the reason for that. He had hypothesised that when the light vanished altogether the field would no longer be operative, and Fred and Siva's emergence from the caves suggested that he had been correct. Since Field Beta had been only marginally brighter than Field Alpha and was declining at a similar rate, it seemed that it should vanish at any time now.

But it had not vanished yet. Inside it he could see the motionless figures of two naked young women. What was it with the Dragon and female nudes, he wondered. Could the legend that the Dragon had really been a shapeshifting human mage be true?

One of the women was unusually tall, as well as clearly being strong and athletic. She was also very beautiful. As she also had striking red hair, there seemed little doubt that she was Princess Astra of Aqualaria; she fit the description in the legends perfectly.

The identity of the other woman was less certain. She was tall, though not as tall as Astra, but far more willowy than her companion. She was very pretty, without quite being in Astra's class, and had dark hair. Carl hoped that she might be the strangely named Princess Exotica who featured in many of the sagas, but he was far from certain. Well he should soon find out, when the field finally failed. Or would he? He suddenly remembered the language problem, only solved in the case of Fred and Siva by the latter's magical intervention.

  1. He noticed that his light meter, which he had naturally brought with him, was no longer detecting any radiation at all from the beam - or rather from where it had previously been. He waited expectantly.
  2. It could still be several hours - or even a day or more - before the field finally vanished altogether. He reluctantly tore himself away and left the caves.
  3. Meanwhile, back at the lab, Sylvia had realised that the only part of the caves where Fred and Siva could possibly have been hidden was the bit that Carl had declared unsafe. Many people had thoroughly searched every inch of the rest. She smelt a rat.
  4. Meanwhile, back at the lab...
