Not only had the fire been the best way to fake Fred and Astra's deaths -
though risky, as they could have really died - but there had been another
reason for the High Priestess and Falena deciding to use it. The
tradition of burning witches at the stake had arisen for a very good
reason: fire nullified all magic. Thus in going through the flames, Fred
and Astra's curses had been removed, and they would acquire no more sores.
However the pair were still in very poor shape. The High Priestess wanted Falena to spend as little time as possible within Allaria, for fear that Reaibn might be able to detect what was going on, so there was a limit to how much she could do at this stage. Once Fred and Astra were fit enough to move, the three would travel on until they were over the Aqualarian border, so that they would be out of reach of Reaibn. Then their healing could be taken further at a much faster rate, and Falena hoped that eventually little in the way of residual damage would remain. Luckily Fred and Astra had not spent long enough in the flames for too much in the way of damage to their internal organs to occur, and what little there was was soon healed. To see to their skin, Falena first had very carefully to cut away the charred fragments that was all that remained of their underthings (which was all that they had been wearing). The High Priestess, channeling her magic through Falena, was then able to ensure that the areas of skin with second, third or fourth degree burns (which was almost all the skin that hadn't received a small amount of protection from their underclothes) were healed so that they were only first degree. That meant that much of their skin would still be red and painful, especially should they attempt to wear clothes, but should now completely heal naturally in no more than a week. They still had a host of disfiguring scars where their sores had been, [94459] which could not be seen to till they were back in Aqualaria. And apart from a few charred wisps, they had lost all their hair, even including their eyebrows. That would probably grow back in time, though, or further magic might be used.
