Carl's initial apparent lack of comprehension had been put on for
Sylvia's benefit (and anyone else who might have been close enough to
overhear). Once she and her unconscious prisoners had departed in the UAS
transport he checked that nobody else was within earshot, and then made a
phone call. "The event has occurred, exactly as predicted," he
said. "Statis field Alpha has collapsed."
"Good. It was excellent work on your part, when you discovered the field a few days back, to submit that fake survey support saying that that bit of the tunnel could collapse at any time and mustn't be entered. So have you secured the field's two occupants?" "No. Unfortunately they made their way out of the caves, and were spotted by the director before I could do anything. I had to play the innocent, and pretend that I thought that they were actors hired for one of the reenactments that the HPS plan to put on. The woman is a magic user, just as we suspected. Unfortunately the director realised that as well. She had her and the man, who could well be the fabled Lord Fred, sedated and taken off to the agency lab."
