"I can't go through with it, knowing that I could cause your death by my false accusation," Astra admitted. "Wait a moment, can I hear muffled giggling?"

Striding over to Wendel's cot, she pulled off the blanket. "What's so funny?" she asked him, her face like thunder.

"You two are what's so funny. I think that Fred's insanity must be catching. Firstly, no-one would ever believe that Belboz could possibly rape you. You are young and athletic, while he is an an elderly man who, from the look of him, has never done any exercise in his whole life. Secondly, I am here to keep an eye on Belboz, remember, and if necessary would bear witness that he has never laid a finger on you. Thirdly, and most fundamentally of all, you are wearing a chastity belt. It's not physically possible for you to be raped, unless it's by someone whose member is no thicker than a pencil! So you must be crazy to have come up with an idea like that, and Belboz must be crazy to have been frightened by it. And while Fred's crazy too, he's not stupid. There was no chance that he would believe you."

1. "By the Goddess, you're right!" Astra said. "Thank goodness I couldn't go through with it. Who knows what Fred would have done to me as punishment."
2. Perhaps proximity to Fred really had made Astra crazy, as she refused to acknowledge the logic of Wendel's argument.
