Off the Road

The dwarf was well aware of the danger, though, which was why he made no move to follow her. He merely called after her: "Come back, lass!" However Andrea took no notice. Instead she continued running in the direction of the far-distant hills...

Which suddenly appeared much closer. How odd! Equally strange, when she looked back over her shoulder she could see no sign of the road or the carriage. Yet she had been running for no more than thirty seconds.

1. There is a second strange shift in perspective, bringing the hills even closer.
2. Somewhere ahead of her she sees that, far distant but rapidly growing closer, something is moving. It's hard to make out what it is, as it seems to waver like a mirage.
3. Feeling a writhing against her skin, Andrea looks down and discovers that the rags which she was wearing have transformed into entangled snakes.
