The harpies flew on across the ocean, their leader carrying Astra (but no longer carrying the late Captain Mountebank) and the others carrying the missionaries and crew members. Afraid that she might meet the same fate as Mountebank, Astra did not attempt to engage her harpy in any further conversation.
After thirty minutes or so, a cliff-face became visible in the distance, and as they approached it Astra saw that there was a large cave entrance about halfway up, towards which they were heading. Presumably the Hall of the Mountain King, which the harpy had said was where they were being taken, must be inside. They flew into the entrance, which proved to be a tunnel lit by torches fixed to the wall at intervals. Before long, they emerged into an enormous cavern, again lit by torches. Sitting on a throne in the centre was what must be the Mountain King himself. He seemed to be:
