Fred and Astra decided to push on through the night, trying to make the
best time possible. They couldn't make the border without stopping at
least a couple of times to sleep - the distance was too great - but they
would delay that until they were in danger of falling asleep in the
saddle. "You reckoned that it was about three days to the border," Astra
said. "But we need to get word to the capital, which of course is a good
deal further. Also in the capital we will find the High Sorceress, who is
the one person who I think might have the power to end the spell that we
are under and thus prevent any more sores from appearing. So we need to
press on as fast as we can."
They skirted the occasional small villages that they came to. Reaibn might have allies there, as he had evidently had in Redstone. Also they didn't want to spook the villagers, who might well assume that they had some terrible infectious disease. It probably didn't make much difference, as it was unlikely that anyone would be up so late. Had there been any real hope of finding another healer with Walter's magical abilities in one of the villages then Fred and Astra might have acted differently, but that seemed vanishingly unlikely. They could hardly be so lucky a second time.
