Astra, choosing at random, took the left passage. It wound from side to
side
every now and again, but
it always headed gently downwards. Fortunately the rock seemed to be
faintly
phosphorescent, giving her just enough light to find her way.
After a while, she heard a faint roaring noise, which as she advanced gradually got louder. Eventually, when the noise was almost deafening, she realised what it was: the sound of rushing water. Then she emerged onto a ledge some twenty feet above a fast-flowing river running through a vast gorge that it had carved through the rock. There was another ledge on the far side of the river, some fifty yards away, and she could see that a passage led from it. A rather precarious-looking rope bridge crossed from one ledge to the other. If she attempted to cross by it, and it gave way, she would be plunged into the raging torrent and would face almost certain death.
