Finding nothing in any of Jarlath's spell books on that glyph, Carola
decided to touch it. She couldn't think of anything else. Then, the glyph glowed with a strange light. A burst of light flashed out of the door, and Carola was paralyzed! She felt tentacles of magic scanning her, penetrating to the very core of her being... Then, the scanning stopped. The door disappeared, and she was pulled through it... She found herself in a room, half in light and half in shadow, like the hallway. Chained to the wall on the shadowy side were her companions. Standing on a throne in the center of the room was a man in ornate armor, surrounded by many people in strange robes that looked like monks. "You have passed our test," said the man. "You are indeed the one we seek. We feared that because you were so young, you would be selfish and foolish. It is true that our initial test did fool you, but you went out of your way to rescue our companions, and figured out our entrance puzzle. We will free your companions, under one condition." Carola was getting a little confused. This was just too much for a fourteen-year-old girl to handle, even one of royal blood. What did these people want her for? It was obvious that they saw her as very important. "What is that condition?" asked Carola. "That you help us. If you do, your friends and your sister may go free. If you do not, they will die."
