a Voice in the Dark

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 9161

Unsure of himself after losing two of the opportunities of a lifetime (let alone the reason he was here in these dark, damp caves!) Fred would not allow such a setback keep him from giving aid to the beautiful damsel screaming "Help!". Fred was on his guard, however, especially after almost being gored to death by that unicorn. That is what had driven him into this maze of tunnels and Fred wanted to make sure that that voice didn't come from that very homicidal four-legged maniac. He inched his way closer to the sound, "Help me, help!" he heard. "I am in one of these caves and am all tied up! Help me!"

Fred kept his pace slow, he figured that if this woman had not been killed yet, a few more minutes wouldn't hurt. That's when the screaming stopped.

~~$#&(!!@!~~ thought Fred and he rushed towards where the sound used to be.

Unfortunately that is exactly what the creature making the voice intended! Within this part of the caves, not far from the reptilian birthing grounds lay a series of very moist smallish caverns. Within grew some plants. Not your garden variety, mind you, they were meat eaters. They could not move from their rooted position, but they were nonetheless dangerous for that. The plants, each a third taller than the average man, grew thorny branches surrounding a central maw. They also produced a silken thread with which they snared prey. These "webspinners" threw the sticky, ropelike lines for some distance in catching what they ate. These lines would adhere to anything save the plants' own threads. The victim, thus caught, would then be hauled inexorably to the plant, impaled upon the spikes, and then (when all struggle was done with) drawn into the waiting maw. Around the plants, the ground shimmered with an overlay of the creatures' silk, as well as the undigested and regurgitated bones of a thousand meals past. The silken floor also gave witness to the limit of the plants' adhesive realm, anything outside the perimeter of the silk was still safe.

Not that this would do Fred much good. He didn't know about this, these plants having evolved in the dark, wet regions, they flourished in deep cave systems or closer to jungle climes. Fred also didn't know that the plants had a telepathic ability, one that tied into the victim's central nervous system. Even as Fred had "heard" the sound of a beautiful damsel (and he never stopped to wonder exactly how he could "hear" that she was "beautiful") he never stopped to realize that he had not heard the "sound" with by his ears, but that it was only in his mind. He was a knight, however, a trained soldier and even as he rushed he kept as much of his guard up, but little by little the seductive tones reverberating unnoticed within his very nerves were overcoming his training.

  1. Oh my! Will Fred become nothing but plant food?!? Stay tuned...
  2. Even before Fred could reach the source of that "beautiful" voice his way was blocked by a ten-foot-tall carrot! or something like that... except now it seemed to be transforming into a gelatinous Thing, reaching out for Fred...
