Fred decided that he/she had to try to destroy the Necronomicon quickly,
while he still had
his sword. If he waited, Jarlath might decide to change his weapon into a
hairbrush or
something. He hoped that destroying the Necronomicon would free Jarlath's
mind. It might
well leave Fred trapped in his current form, but that was a risk he would
have to take.
With all the strength he could muster (substantially less than before, of course) he brought the sword down on the Necronomicon, taking Jarlath completely by surprise. At the moment of impact there was a blinding flash of light and a noise like thunder, and Fred was thrown to the ground by some unseen force. When he could see again, he found that:
