Rose could see that the interest in what Vedagaisic had said was so great
that questions would have to be taken at once, even at the risk of
spoiling dinner. She had made a mistake in letting him tell his story
before they had eaten, she realised.
"I can see that many of you are dying to put questions to our guest," she said. "I think that we had better do that immediately. If you are agreeable, Mister Vedagaisic?" "Of course." He would like to have added "But please just call me Vedagaisic", but wasn't sure whether doing so would have been considered polite. A tall distinguished-looking woman of fifty or so stood up. "Madam Lucia," Rose acknowledged her. "I would like to thank Vedagaisic for coming so far to tell us his news. It is a remarkable story and you told it very clearly." Evidently Lucia knew that his people did not put anything in front of their names, Vedagaisic thought. Or perhaps it was just that she was so important that she did not need to do so. From her bearing she certainly looked important. If he had the chance later on, he would have to ask Rose who she was. He then realised that, after a brief pause, Lucia had resumed speaking, and hurriedly turned his attention back to her. It would be very embarrassing to have to ask her to repeat her question.
