"I may not have understood much of what you're saying," said
Astra, "but it doesn't sound good. And what I want to know is, what does
it all have to do with... But she broke off her sentence as something began to happen in the eye... And we'll leave them there for a moment. It seems to me that it's about time for a few explanations, and maybe a bit of revisionist Gallifreyan history... Yes, this is one of those long and complicated backstory episodes! So brace yourself... First, a word on the Time Lords. We all know, or at least everyone who's writing this thread knows, that the Time Lords are an immensely powerful race dedicated to studying the universe, that they were founded by Rassilon, that the Doctor left them because they wouldn't intervene in history even for good purposes, etc. etc. But few know anything about Gallfireyan history before they became the Time Lords. The truth is, before they were Time Lords, the Gallifreyans were an immensely powerful warrior race. They conquered everything in thousands of galaxies. They were the most feared and powerful race anywhere. Regeneration made them almost immortal. When they invented time travel technology, they were able to defeat enemies by altering their history to make them weaker. They were the absolute masters of everything. But all hubris has its price, and that of the ancient Gallifreyans was no exception. Because you can only alter the fabric of reality so much before it starts to fall apart. Reality was falling apart, and something was coming through the cracks. And that's where the Dark Gods come in. No one knows what they are, or what they want. No being alive now has even seen them in person, and no one in history has except the Gallifreyan who founded a colony on an analog of Terra Prime. (ref: 8897) But what the ancient Gallifreyans did know about them was that the Dark Gods were more powerful than they are. No one could kill their skeleton creature minions. Their technology didn't even seem to obey the laws of physics, and seemed closer to magic! The Dark Gods destroyed thousands of worlds under Gallifreyan control, and reduced the once great Gallifreyan Empire to almost nothing. The time when Gallifrey was at war with the Dark Gods was known by Gallifreyan historians as the Dark Time. Rassilon, Omega, and The Other (i.e. Time's Champion, the being who would become the Doctor centuries later, although the Doctor in this thread hasn't regained his memories of that time) were able to trap them in a one-way interdimensional gateway created by the Hand of Omega. They were sent to an obscure set of dimensions which contains all the universes that in "our" world correspond to Addventure- type stories. The Dark Gods had been driven out of the Whoniverse, but at a great price. The Gallifreyan Empire was no more. All the Gallifeyans still had was the power of Time Travel. So on the ashes of the milataristic Gallifreyan Empire were built the Time Lords. Now, a word on the version of Aquilaria that was colonized by the Gallifreyans (not the Time Lords). The Gallifreyans had limited ability to travel to other univereses. As there is only one Eye of Harmony, and it exists in every universe, due to the peculiar nature of its construction, [ref: 9118], they could use the Eye as a bridgehead to reach other worlds. They were able to create a tunnel in the Eye that would move to a universe that didn't have any Gallifreyans and in which the Gallifreyan Empire could be reestablished. So a colony ship was sent to an alternate univerese. It turned out that this was the universe that the Dark Gods were using as a base! Even when they were driven out of the Whoniverse, the Dark Gods had acquired knowledgde of Time Lord technology, and created the Citadel, a hybrid of magic and technology which could create gateways to other universes. Somehow, the leader of the Gallifreyan expedition was able to turn the power of the Citadel against the Dark Gods, and imprison them. Anyway, reality has been under a lot of stress lately, what with the Brazen Man coming to power, Scott Chen becoming an author, and all this Otherworlds stuff (see episode 8129 for a brief explanation of some of it), it was inevatable that the Dark Gods would return. So now the Doctor, Fred, Astra, Betty, Ragan, and Inquierer are out to stop them...
