There was no pulse in the old wizard's neck or wrist. She noticed that
the goblet had caught his head square on the temple, and left a very large
dent there. No doubt about it - Belboz the Wizard was dead. And the young girl kneeling beside him was terribly confused. She knew for certain that, as Sir Fred, she had been charged by His Majesty with locating and slaying a terrible dragon that lived somewhere within this maze of caverns - one that was devouring young maidens and wreaking havoc across the kingdom. She also knew for certain that, as Hannah, her Aunt Meg had warned her to never venture forth into these cursed caverns, that a terrible evil monster lived here that would happily devour a pretty and innocent young maiden such as herself! The girl was torn. On the one hand, Fred knew it was up to him to stop the dragon - even if the late Belboz had magically deprived him of his armor and his sword (not to mention his manhood)! On the other, Hannah was terrified and wanted nothing more than to go back to the farm, to the arms of Uncle Tom and Aunt Meg - but could she be sure they even existed? Maybe they were just false memories the old dead man on the floor had conjured up to keep her confused and obedient. What should I do? she thought to herself, torn between mounting anger and fear.
