"I thought I did," Jenny said, for the first time betraying a hint of doubt. She had led them through a confusing maze of passages to the point where they now stood.

"It's not your fault," Exotica said. "When the Dragon died, if the folklore is to be believed then all his magic would have been undone. I suspect that he would have used spells to conceal certain tunnels and to create the illusion of others. So that could well have made retracing your steps to the captives very difficult."

"Well I've certainly not been in this chamber before," Fred said. Astra and Exotica signified that the same went for them. Large marble walls seemed to rise into infinity. The very structure of the room was immensely ornate. Alabaster sculptures of cherubs and demons made war in bas relief. Frescoes of strange creatures leered at them. There were several ways to leave. "I suspect that prior to the Dragon's death some of these exits might have led to great danger," Exotica said. "At least now being lost should be the worst thing we have to worry about."

1. They went through a cherub-ornamented archway to the left.
2. They went through a demon-ornamented archway to the right.
3. They stared at the giant grandfather clock that dominated one wall. There was a clockwork-decorated door at its base.
4. They found a trapdoor and went downward.
