"One of the most dangerous things about this realm," said Alexander, "is that you can't really
predict the dangers you face here in advance. There are the nightmares, of course. In the
shallows of the Dreaming, the parts that most people access when they are asleep, they are no
threat to you. But the deeper you venture the more dangerous they get. The greatest danger you
face is within you, at least at first. That is why I had to choose those of strong will to aid us."
"First we must pass through the dreams of one or more of us. That will take us to the First Gate, which takes us out of the minds of those gathered to enter the Dream Realms. Then we shall travel through the dreams of others, and some which are the shadows of other worlds, until we reach the Second Gate. This takes us into the dreams of the dead, which are far more dangerous. It is in the depths of this realm that we will find the dragonbane. Here there are the primal nightmares of mankind, monsters long dead in our world. As a Dragonslayer you may have heard of some of them. Farther beyond that lies the Third Gate, which leads beyond the Dream Realm into other worlds, but even the Preceptors of the Red Hand cannot pass through it. "There are also other travelers in the Dream Realms and creatures who have chosen to dwell there, such as the Eromreven. They are an ancient race who fled their dying world to build a new City in the Dream Realms. Anak was cast out from among them for reasons unknown to us, and they are not well disposed to us because he joined our number. These are only a few of the threats we may face." Lord Frederigo D'Honaire realized that Alexander had in fact told them little. He suspected he was rationing out information so that he could stay in control. "And what are we supposed to fight them with?" said Astra. "We have no weapons or armor. We don't even have any clothes." "Those will come into being when you need them," said Alexander. "But there are some enemies here that no weapons can defeat. We will need to be cautious and cunning to face them." "And where are we?" said Lord Fred. "If this world is in my dreams, where is my body?" "Wherever it was you left it, at least for now," said Alexander. "Those who travel as deep into the Dream Realms as you will often do not awake where they slept. And you are in no danger of waking up until you return. TIme in these realms is not as it is in the waking world. Travelers have lived entire lifetimes here in the space of a single night's sleep." As Alexander spoke, they stepped above the mist. They now seemed to be walking on an ocean beset by strong wind, and the mist was grey, storm-churned water below them. The wind was rough and strong and yet they were able to walk through it. Astra now wore the armor she'd taken into the caves, while Fred, to his surprise, now wore the armor of Sigmund Ravenhelm, the legendary founder of the Order of Dragonslayers. The path took them to the edge of the beach and into the island's forest. He could see eyes shining in the darkness around him and hear the cries of creatures he did not know. Before long, the trees thinned out and they saw
