Belinda and Carola blinked as their eyes adjusted to daylight for the
first time in
many weeks. Before Astra and Fred had said goodbye, Astra had explained
why she would
not be escorting them back to their home in the Aqualarian capital. She
and Fred had to get to
the dragon before it realised that the two girls had escaped. Otherwise
Belinda and
Carola would not be safe from being abducted again. And should that
happen, the dragon's anger
might mean that things would be even worse for them. So they must make
their own way
to the capital of Allaria, for that was much nearer than their home, and
ask
the Allarian King for protection. Then she had kissed them, and
she and Fred had turned back into the caverns.
The girls knew they were still two hundred miles or so from the capital of Allaria - say a week's travelling if they had to do the whole distance on foot. The first day or so would be the hardest, as they would be descending the foothills of the Shreken Mountains. The rest would be across the plains and through the forests of Allaria. The area adjoining the mountains was for the most part sparsely populated, and if they were unlucky they might get to within a day or two of the capital before they encountered anyone. They had not been able to bring any supplies, but since it was early autumn they should find enough nuts and berries to sustain them. Astra had given Belinda her dagger to provide them with a measure of protection, though fortunately dangerous animals (wolves and bears) were rare. The girls had been kept in luxury [4663, opt 3], but the once fine gowns that they wore were now dirty and torn as a result of their journey through the sewers, and they themselves were not in much better condition. So when, only a mile or so from the entrance to the caverns, they came across a mountain lake of clear water, they decided to bathe and to wash their clothes.
