Astra was astonished to see an old man only about three feet tall, with pointed ears and a jolly face and dressed all in green, walk up to the cell, and then walk through the bars as though they were not there. He could only be a magical leprechaun.

"You're confused, girl," he told her. "Just like Marlene, you were arrested for not wearing a corset." [843-2]

"Are you sure?" Astra said.

"Who are you talking to?" Marlene asked.

"The magical leprechaun, of course. Why, can't you see him?"

"You're hallucinating, Astra. There's no-one there."

  1. Yep, Astra has finally lost it.
  2. The leprechaun makes himself visible to Marlene.
  3. Ignoring Marlene's scepticism, Astra asks the leprechaun if he would do her a favour and unlock the cell door.
