Fred felt much better for the fruit that he had eaten. They pushed on
across the plain, the mountains on the horizon gradually getting closer
but still a good way off. The snake remained coiled round Astra's leg,
but she had become accustomed to it by now and hardly noticed it.
Then Fred pointed ahead and a bit to the right of their current direction of travel. "Look!" The grass of the plain was quite long, but just visible above it were the tops of a circle of stone pillars about eighteen inches high. Approaching it, they found that the circle was about ten feet across. Inside it, the air seemed to be making a sizzling sound, and looking across the circle things on the far side seemed to be shifting and indistinct, as in a mirage. However the grass inside the circle did not seem to have been harmed. In fact it seemed to be taller and with more seed heads than that outside the circle. Astra took off the broad-brimmed hat that she wore to protect her scalp from sunburn [44184] - although her hair was starting to grow back as yet it was no more than a red stubble - and rubbed her hand across her head in puzzlement. Then the snake spoke in her mind (Fred of course could not hear it): "That is one of the stone circles of the Ancients. They are said to have strange powers...
