Lord Fred is perturbed by the princess's sudden disappearance. (Not that
he yet knows that she is a princess, their converation having been so
brief.) As a noble as well as a knight of the realm, he knows that it is
his duty to try to rescue her. She had said that she was a prisoner of
the dragon. That presumably must imply that it was the dragon who was
responsible for magicking her away. Fred had not realised that the wyrm
was capable of something like that. A mastery of magic would make it an
even more fearsome adversary than he had been expecting. Worse still, it
could hardly be a coincidence that the maiden vanished immediately after
he had found her. Somehow the dragon must have known of his presence.
Just then, a low growl echoes through the cave. The dragon? Having no other lead, Fred takes the passage that the sound seemed to come from. If he can find the dragon, then perhaps he will find the maiden there too. Then all he has to do is kill the dragon and escort the damsel out of the caves and to safety. It sounds simple when you put it like that, he thinks wryly. The passage leads him into another cavern, where he finds:
