Balischo could tell her no more about the heptillions than that, but it
was quite enough to pique Gloria's professional curiosity. Though
Aqualarians might well have a different word for the heptillions from the
one that the Dunchovians used, she could not recall ever having heard of
any creature or artifact similar to Balischo's description. It was not a
region that her people normally would have cause to visit, but even so it
would be surprising if the things were completely unknown. Unfortunately
the central library where she might have been able to find out more about
them was back in the capital, and returning to consult it was out of the
question.
She would dearly love to satisfy her curiosity and see these heptillions, but she could not be completely sure that her own magic would be sufficient to keep Balischo and herself safe. On the other hand, to save two days in travelling time could be vital. She expected that Astra would want to wait outside the caves until the help from Aqualaria that she had clearly asked for had arrived, but she could not be one hundred per cent sure of that. And it was possible that the Dunchovians would become impatient and would refuse to delay even if Astra wished them to. Weighing up the risks involved in taking the two alternative routes was difficult, especially as she had Balischo's safety to consider as well as her own, but eventually she made up her mind and conveyed her decision to her companion:
