The mayor and centurion had between them composed a message for
Vedagaisic and Balischo to take with them. They had also prepared a
duplicate to go with the post, since they believed that the advantage of
fresh mounts every ten leagues meant that it would arrive first. The
Aqualarian authorities would thus have prior warning of the Dunchovians'
arrival, if only by a matter of a few hours.
Vedagaisic and Balischo were unable to read, so they would not have known what the message which they were carrying said, even if it had not been put in an envelope fastened with both the centurion's and the mayor's seal. As well as reporting what the mayor and centurion had learnt from them, it described how Vedagaisic had - without prompting - remarked on the resemblance between the stone woman and the portrayal of the queen. The mayor and centurion had not added their own speculation that the mystery woman might be Princess Astra. The possibility was so obvious that the authorities in Themyscira would not need any hints. There was enough traffic between the outpost and the capital for there to be a well-defined track, so the two Dunchovians had no difficulty in finding their way. They had been riding for about an hour, when Vedagaisic said: "I've just realised that I forgot to tell them something." "What was that?" "Viani said that in one of the visions the stone woman showed her that her name was Astra." "Is that important?" "I don't know. From the pictures that the centurion and mayor showed us, it seemed that they might have been trying to work out who the woman was before she was turned into stone. Viani thought that she might have been someone important in Aqualaria, which would fit." "Should we go back and tell them?" Vedagaisic considered for a moment. "No. That would delay us by two hours, and besides I don't think that there is any need to tell them. When we get to Themyscira, we can tell the people that we speak to there." "That makes sense. Perhaps we will even get to speak to their chief, the one they call the queen." Vedagaisic chuckled. "If we do get to talk to the queen, that will be a fine tale for you to tell at the winter camp. It might be even better than beads for winning the heart of the girl of your dreams."
