The river continued to curve away, but Astra was on the correct side of
it now. She pushed onwards, leaving it behind her. Ahead, as she had
expected from her knowledge of the region, was a great grassy plain. The
lack of trees or any other obstacles, combined with her excellent
eyesight, meant that she could see for miles in every direction. However
there was nothing to be seen apart from the grass and the occasional herd
of antelope.
As she proceeded, the sun became veiled behind cloud. It was not thick enough to cause her to become lethargic, but it meant that the sun could no longer be used to help with navigation. A human without a compass would have struggled to keep to a constant direction over the all but featureless terrain, so she was glad that she now seemed to have some sixth sense to enable her to hold to her desired course. [87909] She first saw something different from the prevailing monotony ahead of her when it was probably still more than five miles distant. Even her keen eyesight could not determine just what it was at such a range, but before long it was close enough for her to determine that it was:
