True Identity

The knight-turned-princess gasped. It seemed ridiculous - but down inside, she somehow knew Beloboz was telling the truth. The world seemed to spin before her eyes. Gently, the sorceror led the young girl over to a nearby stone where she sat, dazed.

"I know, I know, it's hard to believe - but it's true! Your true name, your highness, is Frederica, Princess of the kingdom, and the king's daughter.

"Several years ago, your betrothed, Sir Gunther, ran afoul of another magic-weilder - a man named Crucius. Gunther stopped Crucius's evil scheme to enslave the kingdom - but Crucius had his revenge. He cast a curse over both Gunther and you. He changed you into a knight and made you believe you were 'Sir Fred', charged with the impossible task of slaying a marauding dragon."

As Belboz recited the story, the Princess's memory came rushing back - her life as the daughter of the king, her engagement to the dashing knight Gunther, the pain of her sudden change into "Sir Fred", Fred's years-long desire to smash the dragon, culminating in his - her - current quest.

Now tears did well up. "And - and what of my beloved Gunther?" she asked unsteadily.

1. "He is still at the castle, but he doesn't remember you - no one does."
2. "My dear, Sir Gunther is, in factm, that very dragon."
3. "He is vanished - no one has seen him in four years."
4. "I can tell you where he is - for a price!"
